Difference Between Intel and AMD

More recently, AMD has launched the second generation of Ryzen Pro processors. There are already quite many comparative performance tests of similar processors from AMD and Intel, but almost all compare the performance of processors at the level of games.

In this material, I would like to compare the processors themselves and the finished solutions from HP based on two competing platforms in terms of acquisition and ownership costs for medium and small businesses.

For comparison, let’s take identical HP 2XX series platforms in the Micro-tower case with the standard configuration for office work on Intel Core i3-7100 and AMD Ryzen3 Pro 2200G. Still, for the adequacy of comparison, we will keep in mind the characteristics of the new Intel Core i3-8100 processor configuration with which distributors have already appeared.

All three processors have roughly the same frequency (from 3.6 GHz to 3.9 GHz), and a comparable number of cores in the last generation – 4 (Intel Core i3-7100 has only 2 physical cores L1 – 384KB (Intel Core i3-8100) and similar energy consumption (up to 65W), allowing 180 W power supplies for standard PC configurations.

At the same time, AMD Ryzen3 Pro 2200G has an undeniable advantage in the form of the built-in graphics core Radeon Vega 8, which is only slightly inferior in performance to the younger models of the 10 series of Nvidia graphics cards and surpasses the built-in graphics from Intel UHD Graphics 630. From the point of view of an office PC, a video of this level will be redundant and not quite necessary at first glance. Still, if you look at the future, the presence of such a graphic core will allow you to use monitors with a resolution of 4K (3840 x 2160), besides this functionality, you get for about the same, and even slightly less (comparison of RRP on processors from AMD and Intel) cost. AMD Ryzen3 Pro 2200G and Intel Core i3-8100 support DDR4 memory with up to 2666 MHz, while The Intel Core i3-7100 works with a DDR4 frequency of 2400 MHz. This option is very significant when working with installed local BDs that require the highest frequency of processor and RAM. The AMD Ryzen3 Pro 2200G showed 9.5% worse than the Intel Core i3-8100 and 20% better than the Intel Core i3-7100 average performance in synthetic tests.

All these indicators show that the AMD Ryzen3 Pro 2200G looks a little more interesting on the aggregate of technical characteristics than similar-priced processors from Intel.

Comparison of HP 285 and HP 290 platforms and available configurations

Both platforms come in a fairly large range. There are both ready-made configurations with a pre-installed Win10Pro (64-bit) operating system and non-pre-installed OS options for companies that use Microsoft cloud products or Open License (OLP) agreements.

So – HP offers options for ready-made sets of jobs with monitors from one box (Bundle), which can save up to 15% of the cost when purchasing a PC immediately and monitor together. Apart from HP, no manufacturer offers such kits on the Russian market.

Monitors from 18.5 to 23.8 inches are available for the set. A 1-year manufacturer’s warranty covers all HP 2XX series configurations. Still, with Care Pack extension packages, you can extend the warranty, reduce the time of guaranteed PC recovery, and select unique warranty conditions, such as retaining faulty media.

The average cost of a Care Pack package with an extension of the warranty on the PC to 3 years is 1500… 2000 rubles, i.e., less than 100 rubles per month for the fact that you will be confident in the guaranteed operational restoration of performance without a visit to the service center. The ability to purchase such packages makes the cost of ownership for you unprecedentedly low. In addition to the immediate repair, warranty commitments include ongoing improvements and updates to preinstalled software, up-to-date drivers and utilities, availability of operating system original images, and many other benefits for enterprise users.

Comparison of the cost of purchasing HP 2XX series with processors from AMD and Intel

The average price of a standard configuration with 4Gb of RAM and HDD capacity of 500Gb or 1TB with Intel Core L i3-7100 or i3-8100 is 26,000 rubles at the current rate without pre-installed OS and 35,000 rubles, pre-installed Win10Pro (64-bit). Similar configurations with the AMD Ryzen3 Pro 2200G processor are available for 23,500 rubles and 32,700 rubles, respectively.

The most interesting in terms of price/performance and total cost of ownership, in my opinion, are still configurations with 8Gb of RAM and SSD drives, which give up to 30% increase in performance compared to HDD, as well as variants of kits with 23.8 inches monitors. For example, the cost of the 4C-16EA HP MT AMD Ryzen 3 Pro 2200G (3.5Ghz)/4096Mb/500Gb/DVDrw/war 1y/DOS n246v 23.8in Sea is about $33,500.

Summing up the comparison, we can conclude that the cost of purchasing and owning a hp 2XX series PC, suitable for most corporate users, on Ryzen 3 Pro 2200G processors is about 15% more profitable than similar solutions on Intel Core l i3-7100 or i3-8100, and at the same time the performance of AMD solutions do not go back to, but on some and superior solutions on Intel processors.
