Perhaps everyone who entered the kitchen needed a blender. Its use is broad, from mixing dough, mixing food for the little ones, preparing refreshing fruit and vegetable smoothies, and preparing mayonnaise and crushing ice into summer cocktails. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify what type of blender will best suit use at home. Learn how to choose the right one!
Factors to Consider when Buying a Blender
In the stores, they offer us rod or hand blenders and their table variants, hand-whipped creamers, and in the last few years, smoothie mixers have also expanded. The primary differences between the different types of blenders for the kitchen are how they are handled, the purposes for use, and where we can store them.
Before deciding on a specific product, answer the following questions:
- what will I use the blender for most often?
- Do I want to mix hard ingredients in it?
- How much space do I have to store it?
Power and weight
An essential factor in the choice of blender is its power. The more power, the more the blender can handle.
- Power for a table blender should be at least 300 W, but if you are going to mix hard raw materials, reach for the product with a power of 1000 W.
- Power of the bar blender – the minor power should not get below 150 W, for mixing soups and puree is sufficient 300 W. If you buy a multifunctional tool with attachments, the administration should reach 600 W.
- Nutritional blender power – to reliably fight even hard raw materials, choose a product with a capacity of 900 W.
- Smoothie blender power – about 350 Wis sufficient for mixing fruits and vegetables.
- Power of mowers and crushers – a 100W device is sufficient for chopping fruit and vegetables, but 300W for chopping ice.
A blender that is too heavy without a holder or stand will not do you any good either. So the lighter the blender, the easier it is to handle. Watch your eyelids, though. They are made with silicone or rubber bands around the perimeter and can be harder to remove, so don’t be afraid to try this activity in the store. The best blenders also have an automatic stop function. So you don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn off the blender and destroy it because an automatic stop will do it for you.
Number of revolutions
The number of revolutions is a parameter that informs you how long it will take for the blender to dilute food or raw materials. It corresponds to how many times the knife turns in a minute. Some products offer smooth speed control, so always be interested in the highest value.
- Table mixers for regular mixing are sufficient with 11,000 rpm, but if hard raw materials are required, choose 20,000 rpm.
- For bar mixers, the lower limit should not have been below 11 000 rpm.
- For hand beaters, 1 000 rpm is sufficient.
- Nutritional blenders should have a value of 20,000 rpm.
Electrical appliances can offer a wide range of functions, but they depend on the price category. The most popular part is smooth speed control and the possibility of setting the blender or pulse button operation. You will increase the performance to the maximum.
When selecting, make sure that the product has an overheating fuse that switches it off in case of overheating and damaging the engine. For example, if you opt for a model with a mixing bowl, it is advisable to provide a safety fuse that does not allow the appliance to turn on if the container is misfitted or the lid is poorly closed.
Some blenders are supplied without accessories; others may have additional attachments and mixing containers in the package. Thanks to special attachments, you can also use the blender as other appliances that you would have to source especially.
Of course, the better, the better. Look especially at the knife material. Plastic is most commonly used for body products, but it should be high-quality or stainless steel. Stainless steel is best; in nutritional blenders, knives should also be covered with a titanium layer that vitamins and minerals do not run away. Body production containers are made of either plastic or Glass, Glass and the advantage is if they are equipped with a scale (measuring GlassGlass).
Choose the size of the container depending on how many people you will be preparing the meal for. For example, a volume of 0.7 l is suitable for a cocktail for one person. However, if you are going to prepare mixtures for more than one person, you better reach for a size of about 1 l. It is always better to have a larger container to prepare even smaller quantities than vice versa.
You have to accept that the operation of the blender is noisy. It usually ranges from 80-90 dB, compared to driving a truck in urban traffic. Noise is caused by engine rotation and vibrations that occur when processing hard raw materials. It is necessary to hold the product at high speeds, as it tends to “travel.” The more robust the machine at home, the more stable it will be. On the market today, you can come across products called silent, which promise noise of only 72 dB. For this reason, some are fitted with non-slip feet.
Length of the power cord
The cable should not bother you when handling. Therefore, it is not good to have a short or long power cord. Ideal if the product has a unique space for its storage.
Cheap vs. expensive devices
If you work irregularly with the blender or use it mainly to mix children’s food, you will be 20 years old with a cheaper design. However, weaker engines and lower-quality knives can leave non-blended pieces of food in liquid diets, and they can’t handle hard ingredients at all.
However, be prepared for the fact that imperfectly blended foods affect the overall taste. For example, if the part is blended and the region remains whole, the dishes may not have the flavor you expect. It is, therefore, necessary to reach for seasonings.
The low purchase price will also be reflected in the quality of the production material and the length of service life. Therefore, count on softer quality plastics and overall processing.
The overall design of the electrical appliance refers to the long service life of several years, even in daily intensive use. They are equipped with high-quality and sharp stainless steel knives, which even hard raw materials will process smoothly. As a rule, they offer a snag that makes your job easier.
In this category, you may also come across various accessories that you will receive together with the blender.
- The ramming agent – suitable for mixing butter, ice cream, and other dense consistency. However, you will also appreciate it when processing light leafy vegetables.
- Mini containers – they are used if you only prepare a smaller amount of food. Therefore, they are ideal for children’s dishes and processing traps from seeds or butter.
- Container for dry ingredients – for nuts, coffee, or cereals. Of course, you can mix them even in a standard container, but dry raw materials can make the standard container more and more visibly wear out due to the hard consistency. Therefore, it is advisable to process them in a particular container.
The operation of the devices is intuitive and straightforward for both capacities. Cheaper models offer a speed knob or a rotary selector; expensive ones allow you to save your favorite program under the accelerated option. You may come across several mixing programs with expensive blenders, but remember that only a few are always used in practice. So don’t pay unnecessarily for what you won’t use.
Mixing in vacuum
The hot trend of recent years has been vacuum mixing. Blenders with this function offer both the ability to mix classically and with sucked air. Gourmets especially appreciate this.
The most significant difference between conventional high-speed and vacuum mixing is in the oxidation process. Thanks to mixing with suourded air, mixtures remain fresh for longer and do not change color quickly. Apple or avocado puree, for which the process of oxidation (color change) is the fastest, can be prepared several hours in advance without having to worry about them turning unsightly brown. The pulp and water are also not separated during the new mixing method.
Tip: You can see exactly how it works in our review of the Lauben Vacufit Blender vacuum blender.
Types of blenders
(also hand or submersible blender)
As the label suggests, it is a tall and thin device that is held in hand. These electric blenders are top-rated for their storage and light handling. A big plus is their removable leg, which makes them easy to wash. When choosing, focus primarily on their weight; remember to hold them in your hand during work.
Cheaper blenders have only one attachment; the more expensive ones also have a chopping suit or whisk, which turns into a hand beater with a bar blender. It is suitable for the preparation of fruit cocktails, soups, and sauces. Its use is broader than a table blender, but you can hardly mix hard fruit with it. To prepare cold and hot dishes, it is better to choose a metal version, which also has a longer service life than plastic.
The disadvantage of the bar blender is the need to hold the safety switch throughout the mixing. The hand blender is also not intended for long operation due to overheating.
- easy to use
- simple maintenance
- with other attachments becomes a multifunctional blender
- holding the safety switch during operation
Tip: Homemade mayonnaise? You can handle it with a rod blender in a minute!
Use a bar blender to make delicious homemade mayonnaise in a few moments.
- one egg
- 100 – 200 ml oil
How to do it:
In a mug, shake one egg and add salt and pepper to taste. During mixing, we water the oil. Mayonnaise will be thick depending on how much oil we add. To taste, we can add sugar, cucumbers, or spices.
The main difference for table blenders is the material from which the mixing vessel is made. Similar to rod blenders with accessories, they can be made of plastic. However, it is not recommended to mix hot drinks and dishes.
Plastic containers are cheaper and more resistant to breakage. The second option is a glass container, which is more durable, less prone to scratches, and does not carry productions from past dishes. However, GlassGlass is more likely to break when it falls to the ground. On the other hand, it is heavier, which also makes it difficult to handle the blender.
Always choose the table blender according to performance. If you want him as a versatile helper, his performance should be as high as possible. Thanks to it, it can withstand intense loads for a longer period of time. You will mix liquid food with it and dry ingredients such as cereals or coffee (but a coffee grinder is much better for making ground coffee). Large kitchen blenders can easily process doughs, from which you can bake bread or a bun in the oven.
The table blender is suitable for crushing ice and preparing cast dough, for example, for pancakes. Rod blenders consist of only two parts, so they take up less space compared to kitchen blenders. Unlike rod blenders, they do not mind prolonged mixing and do not have to stick to the safety switch all the time. The disadvantage of table blenders is the worse washability, which is related to their size.
- they don’t mind longer mixing
- smooth operation without the need to hold the safety switch
- glass container does not carry the smells of food
- poorer washability
- more complex to build
These appliances are ideal for preparing dough and whipping. They are used quickly and easily. They take up little space, and their cleaning takes almost no time.
The whisker already has whisks for whipping and kneading in its basic equipment. However, if you plan to use this type primarily for dough preparation, it is advisable to buy it with a bowl and holder. The appliance whisks evenly and kneads for you while you do something else.
Some types are combined as a bar blender and hand beater together. Attachments can be removable and can be washed in a dishwasher. The correct beater also has a whisk release protection to prevent accidents during use.
- quick and easy handling
- trouble-free maintenance
- takes up little space
- security against the release of whisks
- in basic accessories only whisks for whipping and kneading
- with several extensions, the price increases
This device is currently prevalent. Use this fruit and vegetable blender, also known as smoothie makers, to get a healthy and refreshing drink or a quick snack. Its use is not one-sided. You can also make children’s snacks or soups with it.
The advantage of smoothie blenders is a portable mixing bowl in which you prepare the drink, put it on the lid, and take it with you on the go. Although, they are mainly smaller than standard table mixers. The mixing bowl has a volume from 0.5 to 0.9 liters.
When asked how to choose a fruit blender, everyone has to answer what they want to mix. If you want to make the best smoothie even from frozen ingredients, it is recommended to buy a blender with a power of at least 350 watts. In general, however, these products have lower performance than other kitchen blenders. Those with lower performance, for example, might not be able to cope with ice. Smoothie blenders are available in several colors to accurately capture your mood.
- easy to wash and store
- quick preparation of a drink or snack
- removable bottle with cap
- cheerful color scheme
- higher power consumption is needed to mix frozen food
- preparation of cocktails for only two people
And as summer approaches quickly, and with it the prime time of refreshing cocktails, we also add a recipe for summer watermelon drink for inspiration:
- 1/2 watermelon
- 2 peeled lemons
- pinch of salt
- ice cubes
How to do it:
Nuclei can also process the best high-performance smoothie blenders. First, cut the pulp of the melon into pieces. Add lemons, salt, and ice cubes to the blender. Serve in a tall glass and garnish with mint.
Other types of blenders
In addition to the basic ones mentioned above, two other variants are available on the market.
Please do not confuse it with a smoothie maker. Smoothies can also be prepared, but they are especially suitable for fans of a healthy lifestyle. It differs from the fruit blender mainly by the mixing method, the overall design, and the higher power of around 1000 W. However, in terms of size, they are comparable to table mixers.
During mixing, micronutrients that are contained in food are not destroyed, and at the same time, you get more important vitamins, enzymes, and minerals from food. It can also process seeds and other hard raw materials. Containers are also available for selected models, in which you can immediately consume or transfer the prepared mixture.
Cutlery and shredders
A special category that does not dilute the raw materials into mash, but rather fine pieces. The meatmuffs are particularly suitable for food processing. Finely chop onions, herbs, and various fruits and vegetables. A product with a power of 100 W is sufficient for chopping. A power of about 300 W is required for crushing.
How to take care of the blender correctly.
After each use, the blender must be disassembled and washed well according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In the instructions, you will read if and which parts can be washed in the dishwasher. Do not forget to dry the metal parts well. If you plan to use the blender daily, it must be easy to disassemble and fold. Even knives should be washable.
Mix only the food for which the product is intended. You will extend the life of the appliance so that you do not overload it unnecessarily. Therefore the power is important. No less important is the correct drying of the attachments. In case of poor drying, they can become eased and damaged. So always check that they are dehydrated after washing in the dishwasher.
If you use more than one of these appliances in the kitchen, we recommend that you think about purchasing a food processor, which can often do the work of the above products.
