How To Clean A Top Loading Washing Machine?

Did you know that for the washing machine to function correctly, you need to clean it? If you use the washing machine every day, then regular maintenance is essential. The process might be confusing, especially when so many washing machines are available in the market. The method we use to clean a top load washing machine differs from cleaning a front load.

Today, we will discuss the top loader washing machine and the correct way to clean it. Remember that you need to know the right way to clean your washing machine to work at its optimum efficiency.

What Do You Mean By A Top Load Washing Machine?

Top Load Washing Machine

We will start with the fundamental question – what is a top loader washing machine? In simple terms, it is a washing machine where the clothes are loaded through the top of the appliance. This means that the door/lid is on the top, and the drum sits vertically (straight up).

A top load washing machine functions either as a semi-automatic or a fully automatic washing machine. In a front load washing machine, the door needs to be sealed shut to run; hence clothes can’t be added mid-way. But in a top-load machine, we can add clothes mid-wash. It is cheaper and lighter than a front-loading fully automatic washing machine.

However, it does not have all the wash programs like a front-load washing machine. So, the cleaning is not that effective, and neither is it suitable for all cloth types. The top load washing machine tends to be rougher on the clothes, so it is best not to use it for your delicate garments.

How To Clean A Top-Loading Washing Machine?

Let us look at the cleaning process for a top load washing machine and the ingredients used.

To clean the tub, you will need –

  1. White vinegar
  2. Baking powder
  3. Soft towel, preferably a micro fabric cloth
  4. Soft bristle brush (you can use an old toothbrush)

Steps To Clean The Tub

Step 1 – Unload The Tub

Unload The Tub

If you have just finished washing your clothes and want to clean the machine, the first step is to unload. Remember that it is best to empty the clothes right after the washing is over. This reduces the chance for mold growth and mildew. In case you weren’t able to take it out before 2 hours (never keep it more than 2 hours), then you can ‘quick wash’ it again.

Tip – Leave the lid open to dry the interior if you do not clean the machine after every wash. This reduces mold growth and the chances of skin infections.

Step 2 – Add White Vinegar

White Vinegar

One of the best homemade DIY cleaners is a combination of white vinegar and baking powder. But we do not add both of these ingredients together. We start by adding one liter of white vinegar into the tub.

Step 3 – Set The Wash Cycle Or Program

Wash Cycle

After adding the white vinegar into the tub, close the washing machine door. If your washing machine has a ‘tub clean’ option, then select it and turn the machine on. Otherwise, select the highest water level and the hottest temperature setting. Hot water is more effective than cold water when it comes to cleaning, especially when the clothes are extremely dirty.

Let the water pour in, and then pause the machine. Let this vinegar mixture sit for an hour to help with the stain removal. After an hour, you can start the wash cycle.

Step 4 – Add Baking Soda

Baking soda

After the wash cycle with white vinegar is over, pour one cup of baking soda into the tub. Select the same wash cycle and run the washing machine again. Never open the washing machine door when it is operating. When the washing machine stops running, you can wipe the inside of the drum with a soft cloth.

Alternate Step –

Tub Cleaner

Instead of using white vinegar and baking soda, you can use the prescribed tub cleaner or even chlorine bleach. If you use the tub cleaner, read the instruction, pour the required amount. In case you are using chlorine bleach, add four cups into the drum. After adding your desired cleaner, select the wash cycle. Run the machine and wipe it using a soft towel after the process is over.

To Clean The Liquid Dispenser

To clean the liquid dispenser, you will need

  • White vinegar
  • Soft towel, preferably a micro fabric cloth
  • Soft bristle brush (you can use an old toothbrush)

Remember the one hour where you let the white vinegar sit in the drum? Let us make use of this time by cleaning the dispenser. Most dispensers are removable, but if it is not, you can heat one cup of distilled vinegar, pour it into the dispenser, and let it sit for 15 minutes.

A dispenser that can be removed might also have removable parts. Clean the dispenser using an old toothbrush, warm/hot water, and white vinegar. Fill a small tub with water and add the vinegar into it. Submerge the dispenser into the bucket and let it sit for 15 minutes.

Remember to clean the dispenser area to ensure a smooth flow of water. Replace the dispenser after cleaning.
