A series of tips and tricks to make the best use of the washing machine will reduce its consumption and increase its durability over time.
How to Use a Washing Machine: 5 Steps
How to limit current consumption
Most manufacturers try to offer washing machines with high energy efficiency and increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence classes that can leverage numerous sensors to automate operating parameters and reduce consumption. Nonetheless, you can still adopt a series of precautions that will save you some money in your bill.
In this sense, it tries to use the ECO programme as much as possible or, in any case, cycles at low temperatures. Do not overload the washing machine and fill the basket at a maximum of 60/70% of its maximum capacity.
It is better to do two cycles instead of just one at full load, obtaining unsatisfactory results. Not to make the opposite mistake, which is to load the washing machine with very few clothes and make the washing machine work untaxed, would be an unnecessary waste of water and electricity. Take advantage of the delayed start function to start your car overnight or at times with cheaper energy rates.
Divide the garments correctly.
Throwing all kinds of fabric inside the basket is the best method to combine real disasters. The subdivision concerns white and coloured garments and must consider the type of fibre and level of dirt.
Different fabrics also require different temperatures and timings, so the more precise the subdivision, the better the final results will be. To facilitate the operation, use bags to collect linen and always look at the labels to understand which garments can be grouped. Another tip is to wash garment sets of the same weight to prevent the lighter fabric from being ruined. For example, it is better not to insert a coat with shirts in the same load.
Always read the instructions.
Too often, for laziness or because you believe there is nothing relevant to know, the attached manual is flipped quickly. In fact, it is always a good idea to give a careful reading, in particular to the section related to washing cycles and additional options.
Only in this way will you understand which programs best suit your needs and discover practical functions that you completely ignored. Above all, this advice becomes an essential aspect if you have purchased a smart washing machine of the latest generation that, in addition to countless functions, adds Wi-Fi connection and an app for remote management.
The instructions are also useful to decide the type of detergent and how to add it correctly in the tray and know the main ordinary maintenance operations and the correct procedures.
Watch out for centrifuge regulation
Normally the washing machine automatically sets the number of revolutions of the centrifuge according to the selected program. Many models offer the possibility to manually vary the speed, resulting in the more or less damp laundry at the end of the cycle. A general rule is always to stay around 800/1000 rpm, which is a value that avoids tissue damage. In the case of wool garments, the speed shall not exceed 400 ppm, while in silk garments, the centrifuge must be excluded.
Do not neglect the cleaning of the washing machine
You can not expect perfectly sanitized garments if the washing machine is dirty. Many believe that being an appliance in constant contact with detergents is enough to keep it clean. Unfortunately, dirt, limestone and soap residues settle in places invisible to the eye and over time can cause malfunctions or trigger skin allergies in sensitive subjects.
The clue of neglected cleaning is a bad smell from the basket, which will contaminate the laundry by transferring to washed clothing. One of the reasons is the proliferation of mould and bacteria that lurk between the door seal’s folds, in the filter and directly inside the washing machine.
Each part must be cleaned regularly using specific disinfectants or natural products. For the basket, it is possible to take advantage of special cleaning programs if present or start a vacuum cycle with water at 90°C, adding a disinfectant substance. The filter is easily removed, and it is enough to rinse it under the tap to remove any impurities. Porthole and gasket can be sanitized using citric acid or dissolved sodium percarbonate in water, taking care to eliminate any musty and dirt deposit.
