Wireless speakers are now more than ever, and they are all good at something. Some are powerful, others compact, but there is something in the middle that, for me personally, has become a real universal option. I’ve written and shot a video about the wireless acoustics of the JBL brand more than once, but I have my favorite – the Charge series. Only she was able to offer something truly universal and suitable for all situations. You can listen to it at home, take it with you to nature and even use it as an external battery for your smartphone. In general, it is a Kalashnikov assault rifle among the speakers, which never let me down. The gadget recently came out already in the fifth generation and is worthy of giving it a couple of thousand characters of text.
The JBL Charge series is rightly appreciated and loved by millions of users.

First portable column
My first acquaintance with the Charge line took place at the level of the third generation. Before that, I had other models, such as the first-generation JBL Clip. And that’s why I realized how a portable column could and should sound. Then I bought other series – Xtreme, Clip, Flip and Go. There are probably no JBL speakers that I wouldn’t meet at work or buy for myself. My last acquisitions so far are JBL Clip 4 and Xtreme 3. Now I have Charge 5, which kind of replaces both of these columns.
JBL Charge 5 review
JBL Charge 5, like the rest of the new models of the brand, is produced in a huge number of colors, but I liked the one you see in the photo. It is called “SQUAD” and looks pretty good in almost any interior, and nature and absolutely excellent.
The gadget is sold in a classic box, which, except for himself, almost nothing. Apart from the instructions and other paper products, only the cable was put in the box. Nothing else is needed, as charging goes through the most versatile USB Type-C. I didn’t even get it. And also, if your phone also has such a connector for charging, you will be able to use the cable in two cases – to charge the speaker and to charge the phone from the speaker.
A column with a built-in battery
JBL Charge 5 has a large battery with a capacity of 7500 mAh. From it, you can not only provide listening to music but also charge other gadgets. If you don’t connect with additional consumers, you can stretch your playing time to 20 hours. Just imagine almost a day of music. You can wake up at seven in the morning, immediately turn on the music and it will work until three o’clock in the morning. Of course, this is only possible at a small volume, but the fact itself is impressive.
What JBL Charge 5 sounds like
As for the quality of the music, everything is fine. JBL Charge 5 features a long-running speaker, a separate high-frequency speaker, and two branded passive low-frequency emitters. It always seemed to me that they were the ones who set the recognizable brand style. In such assembly, speakers can provide a decent sound even on the street.
The pressing bass does not have a small volume to count on, but the sound is still pleasant. As the volume rises just above the “whispering” level, the JBL’s signature sound begins to “wake up.” There is a nice bottom, but the high frequencies are perfectly audible and very well distinguishable.
Up to the level at which the column in the room has to shout, the music of almost all genres sounds very worthy. If you raise the volume further, then predictable disruptions begin, and at maximum volume, the column is quite difficult to give out what it can in normal listening mode. But at this volume, even on the street at a distance of 3-5 meters from the column will be difficult to talk. If that’s not enough for you, you should already look towards JBL Xtreme 3. This one’s going to pump anything. And if you want passers-by in the line of sight to hate you, then for you JBL PartyBox, which I talked about at the end of last year.
It is such a possibility of sound I called at the beginning of the article universal. Charge 5 can really be listened to indoors and outdoors so that the music sounds comfortable and high quality. At the same time, without causing discomfort in itself and in the process of communicating with someone.

Of the additional features, which can not be overlooked, I will say about water protection on the ip67 standard. If you look at the characteristics of this certification standard, you can see that the column can even be submerged in water at a depth of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. From dust protection of such a device and will be complete. Of course, this does not mean that it is necessary to put such experiments, but you can be sure that from splashes, heavy rain, and falling into a puddle column is protected by 100%.
Don’t worry about the mud. Such a case of synthetic fabric is not dirty very much and cleaned just with a brush. The main thing is to do it without fanaticism, and everything will be fine. For example, when I was selling my Charge 3 after about five years of use, it was like a new one, although I took her out for picnics more than once.
Music via Bluetooth 5.1
Bluetooth 5.1is connected. There are no connectors for wired connection, but on phones, such output is less and less common, and wireless standard of transmission, especially such a modern, will provide both quality, economy, and connection speed.
If you have several JBL Charge 5 or have them from your friends, you can make a powerful audio system. Thanks to PartyBoost mode, you can combine two of these speakers into a stereo or just a loud sound source. Place them around you in a clearing, and the power of the system increases multiples of speakers.
Is it worth buying JBL Charge 5?
To sum up, I’ll tell you who this column fits. If you need something that you will listen to every day at home or in the office, and in the summer to take with you to nature or to the country, the best option you will not find. Especially if you’re not an introvert and the music you turn on for the background to have a pleasant chat, not to scare the bass of the surrounding pigeons.
The column is really very versatile, and the fact that it is a little domesticated and became more suitable for use at home, you can see from its body. The charging connector is now not located under the lid. It can be connected by a wire and put on a shelf to forget about charging. I don’t see any other explanation. Especially since the OUTPUT USB connector was hidden under the lid.
