Mattress is Made Up of Zones of Different Rigidity

No matter how perfect modern mattress production technologies are and how amazing the properties of filler materials are when the product is completely homogeneous in its entire length and width, it cannot provide the perfect level of comfort and proper support for all parts of the body. It is no coincidence that many people like to put additional pillows under their feet, shoulders or lower back. The correct level of rigidity of the mattress can be comfortable for some areas and is completely unsuitable for others.

To get rid of this problem allows the use of special types of mattresses with a heterogeneous level of rigidity. Such products have appeared relatively recently, but today are already on the market an extensive range. There are even special models with adjustable rigidity. Still, most are divided into several zones, and many manufacturers make mattresses following the client’s individual preferences – just perfect for sleeping and rest!

Types of Mattress Zoning

The breakdown of the mattress into areas with different levels of rigidity is called zoning. Depending on the desired properties, the product may be subject to cross-sectional or longitudinal zoning. In longitudinal mattress clearly divided into two beds, which have different indicators of rigidity. This is ideal for couples with a big difference in the bodyweight of partners or just different preferences on the bed’s rigidity. Also, such a mattress will suit those who sleep alone but has certain problems with the back – on one half, you can sleep for pain relief, and on the other to protect against exacerbations.

Cross-zoning provides the optimal level of support in the right areas, such as the lower back, which often “sags” on too hard mattresses, which is the cause of several diseases. Usually, there are 3 to 15 rigidity zones in these mattresses: there is a reinforced middle part and softer areas for the legs and head in the simplest. More areas make the difference in stiffness less noticeable and transition – more harmonious, which positively affects comfort and ensures the correct position of the spine, complete relaxation of the muscular corset.

The main zoning methods for different production technologies

zoning methods

The zonal can be both connectionless models and products with an independent spring unit. Accordingly, mattress manufacturers use different technologies to achieve the desired orthopedic effect and optimal rigidity level in different zones. The most advanced spring mattresses can have up to 15 zones of different rigidity, which is achieved by using springs of wire of different thickness, several turns and, as a result, elasticity. Zoning is sometimes used even in Bonnel-type blocks by adding PAP layers between rows of springs, but such a mattress’s orthopedic properties are still lacking.

Most springless models usually have 3 to 7 different rigidity zones. The choice of one or another zoning method in this case directly depends on the type of mattress filler:

  • In natural latex products, the creation of zones is achieved by different density and diameter of holes at the perforation, mandatory for this material, much less often – the relief cutting of the surface of the finished product;
  • for products from different forms of foam- styrofoam technologies are used, such as figure cutting off the surface, internal contour cutting, a combination of blocks of different rigidity of materials, insertion of amplifying springs, surface insertion of materials on a gel basis or from a memorial.

In mattresses with a combined filler, the issue is usually solved by different thickness layers of soft and hard materials, such as natural latex and coconut copra. Often, several methods are used for zoning at the same time. A rich selection of technologies allows today to produce mattresses for all tastes and purses, and zone mattresses are rapidly becoming cheaper. The simplest products of synthetic materials with three rigidity areas today can be found even in the economy segment.

Does such a mattress help to get rid of back diseases?

Any well-chosen orthopedic mattresses can relieve pain and prevent the exacerbation of several diseases, as well as absolutely irreplaceable as prevention. However, only manufacturers of such products for marketing purposes, to increase sales, can talk about the “medical” effect and eliminate the existing chronic diagnoses of the musculoskeletal apparatus. No mattress will reverse the processes that led to osteochondrosis, arthritis, sciatica, hernia, but it is possible to prevent further disease development.

When choosing a mattress, people with a sore back should pay special attention to general recommendations on the level of rigidity, as well as the prescriptions of their doctor. Products with multiple stiffness zones allow optimal support to specific spine parts, which is a more effective solution in the presence of common diseases of the thoracic and lumbar spine. Also, it is possible to use the same mattress both on the days of aggravation and all the rest of the time due to the ability to change or even adjust the stiffness at the right time.

With such mattresses, you no longer need to compromise and adjust to the standard indicators of rigidity or comfortable parameters for the partner – now, the mattress itself adjusts to you. Provide yourself with the perfect comfort and healthy sleep with zonal mattresses in every way!
