In the pursuit of cheaper products, some mattress manufacturers forget about the most important quality criteria of any home goods – safety. A significant proportion of buyers, usually in the lower and middle price segments, complain about an unpleasant chemical smell emanating from the new product if you try to open the case or even without it. The source of this odour can be both the filler’s material and special glue, bonding among themselves different layers.
In addition to obvious discomfort during sleep, the presence of harmful volatile compounds can also negatively affect human health. Yes, over time, the smell erodes, but tolerate headaches, suffer from allergies, insomnia, and, in the worst cases, and asthma attacks are ready few. Many products on sale are deprived of this disadvantage due to the company’s strict quality control, safe raw materials, and the abandonment of the technology of pasting layers in favour of other types of fixing.
In recent years, the market has appeared many spring models, made with the so-called mechanical assembly, when the connection of the filler with the block is provided not with glue but with special metal staples. Simultaneously, the framework design is less secure than traditional technology using glue and side restraints and serves such mattresses usually less. However, they are, by definition, devoid of the smell of glue.
Mattresses without glue and smell: which to choose?
Technology disruption or informed choice?
As practice shows, the glue connection of layers of filler and additional mattress design elements is used by the vast majority of manufacturers. Another thing is that this should use special glue with hygiene certificates and is allowed for use in household goods production. Eliminating the smell of glue is always one of the stages of the process. If you feel it after the purchase, the manufacturer has made an obvious violation, which gives reason to think about the product’s quality as a whole.
At the same time, the unpleasant smell does not mean that the mattress is dangerous for health. Moreover, many even deadly substances have no odour at all. Often an unpleasant aroma is associated with low-quality filler material, especially if synthetics are used. Cleaning is a mandatory part of natural latex production, foam, and other materials, so persistent odour is evidence of violations. However, a slight residual smell of rubber may be present in expensive latex mattresses.
When choosing a quality product in the store, should be based on the following facts concerning the technology of mattress production:
- A good mattress can have several layers of filler, but not too large a number;
- The soft side of the side is a beneficial element of the structure, although, in 99% of cases, it is attached to the glue;
- A mattress with a hygienic certificate could only be manufactured using safe adhesives and filler;
- a product with neither the smell nor the documents of Rostest can be much more dangerous than the most “smelly” mattress.
If you encountered the smell of glue when buying a mattress to order, then there is nothing wrong with it – the manufacturer did not allocate an additional few days for weathering and immediately from the factory put the finished product in the store. This is especially evident in the showrooms of leading companies and warehouses in the regions, where the same mattresses do not smell at all, as they lie for more than one month. Some needlessly believe that for the demonstration are better models – a single production for all stores in the country would be costly for the manufacturer.
But what distinguishes good mattresses and a normal manufacturer is the presence of special lookout lightning on the case. The possibility of visual inspection (and even sniffing) filler expresses the company’s confidence as its own products, although, for some mattresses, it is impossible for technical reasons.
Mattresses from which materials to choose
A successful alternative to products using glue are springless models made entirely of natural or synthetic material. A wide range allows you to choose the perfect solution for people of any age, height and weight, individual preferences. Glue in such mattresses is absent in principle, and the smell of filler can be manifested only in rare cases – and then, weathered for 1-2 days. Consider the most popular solutions:
- coconut copra is a true bestseller for infants and those who are recommended to sleep on a hard surface;
- from natural latex – objectively the best mattresses of the medium and below-average level of rigidity for people aged 25-50 years, who love comfort;
- from Stypolyuretan – it is worth mentioning that you need to choose only the products of proven manufacturers. Good mattresses from pups should not have any smells;
- from the memorial form – products with a unique anatomical effect, providing good support for the lower back.
Filler can smell not only “from the plant” but also absorb the surrounding aroma or become a source of unpleasant smell due to the reproduction inside the mattress bacteria and fungus. The most exposed to this effect are batting, natural wool, felt, some types of synthetics. Moisture protection can only be provided with special waterproof types of fabric for the case and special waterproof mattresses. This issue is especially relevant for young parents and the elderly – now there are many models with good protective properties.
Thus, the presence of adhesive compounds and odour in itself is not a reason for not buying but requires a more thorough check of the quality of the mattress, especially in the presence of respiratory diseases. Simultaneously, you can find a sufficient number of suitable options on the market if the lack of glue is a matter of principle for you.
