Scanners Buying Guide- How to Choose a Good Scanner

A document may need to be scanned for a variety of reasons. For example, the payment system may require a digital copy of your passport. Or you’ll want to digitize your lines written in a children’s notebook. Another reason for scanning is time. After all, paper photos and film slides gradually deteriorate. The best way to save them is to digitally translate them into a digital form. In short, the scanner can be very useful. It remains to be seen how to decide on the choice of the right model.

SCANNER TYPE

First, you need to choose a type of scanner. In total, there are four types:

The tablet scanner is a small-height device equipped with a glass substrate. Under it moves a light beam with a photovoltaic cell, fixing everything that lies on the glass. This scanner is useful for digitizing books, magazines and even solid items. Everyone remembers the famous joke with the scanned fifth dot, right?

The long scanner works on a different principle. It is able to pass through itself only individual paper sheets. The fact that such a device consists of a special roller, endowed with photovoltaic cells. The main advantage of such a scanner – the possibility of two-way digitization, a two-page document does not need to be turned over. Also, the device will like the minimum dimensions – it can easily be moved to another room or office. Unfortunately, such scanners are not suitable for digitizing magazines or books, unless they are torn apart by separate leaves.

The slide scanner is only required by photo labs. Such a device is not capable of digitizing paper documents – it scans only slides and film. No matter how many of them you have, there is no sense to spend a large sum on the purchase of such a scanner. It is much easier to buy a tablet model equipped with a slide adapter. The quality of the result will be slightly worse, but after scanning the film you do not have to look for a buyer for an unnecessary device.

Portable scanners have only recently appeared. This is usually a very small device that records the document you’re holding on to them. The result leaves much to be desired, but it is achieved instantly. Often such scanners work in a cooperative with a smartphone or tablet based on the mobile operating system. Sometimes this type is called camera.

SCAN SPEED AND RESOLUTION

The scanner may contain a CIS or CCD sensor. The second variety should be familiar to you by the budget compact cameras. Of course, such a sensor works much better, but the cost is higher, so the CCD sensor is equipped only with expensive tablet scanners.

Other different devices differ in scanning speed. As a rule, any device digitizes quickly enough at draft resolution, whereas when this option increases, problems begin. If you have a lot of two-page materials, it is recommended to buy a model equipped with a two-way machine-delivery device. Unfortunately, finding them is becoming more and more difficult. Usually only MFIs have such a useful supplement.

If we talk about the resolution already mentioned, the quality of the scan depends on it. If you digitize not the most important waste paper, even a 1200 x 1200 DPI scanner (points per square inch) will be useful for this purpose. If you’re digitally digital, you’ll see the 2400 x 2400 DPI.

MOST POPULAR MANUFACTURERS

The scanner is a highly specialized device that is able to search for its buyer for many months, while blazing on the counter of the store. Therefore, not every major manufacturer wants to invest in this direction of funds. So it turns out that the creators of scanners can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Mustek works on budget tablet and camera scanners. There is also an expensive model in the range of this company, the main difference of which is the support of the A3 format. Of course, and the sizes are appropriate. The HP ScanJetscanners have excellent value for quality. Be careful not to buy outdated models! They may not have full support for Windows 10, which will make the functionality limited. Epson and Canon offer a variety of scanners, they threw only a budget segment.

COMMON CUSTOMER ERRORS

  • Some people buy a scanner to digitize a huge amount of waste paper. At the same time, they save money by buying a device not equipped with auto-handout sheets. What is their surprise when it turns out that scanning a hundred sheets – it is not the easiest thing to do! The case is fast, but it is necessary to constantly be at the scanner, transferring documents. The back leaks, the head refuses to work – after this you quickly begin to regret that you decided to save.
  • In other people, the scanner can lie idle. They buy a device to digitize old photos, and then forget about its existence. If you need such a device for the same purposes, then think ten times. Isn’t it cheaper to go to a photo lab?
