Sediment filters

Removing sediments is the first stage of any purification system and, in many cases, an indispensable pre-step, such as pretreated before the water enters the purifying systems. So sediment filters are an intrinsic part of any water purification system.

Materials used to filter consumer water are limited to those used in disposable cartridge filters. Nylon and polypropylene meshes are mainly marketed in three sizes; 5, 10, and 20 inches.

 

Polypropylene filters

They are the most commonly used in sediment filters in cartridges, such as those equipped with purifying equipment. They intervene very importantly in the proper functioning. These filters are not only part of purification systems. They also deal with pretreated water, necessary in many cases for proper subsequent purification.

Mainly the filter material that makes them up is polypropylene. Plastic material for food use and immune to bacterial decomposition. This fact gives it unbeatable properties for use with drinking water.

Polypropylene makes it possible to manufacture fibres of different thickness and length. These fibres are those used to retain particles or sediments. They are mainly manufactured in three formats:

Polypropylene fibre filter.

Composed of microfibers that compact, they form a filter cartridge on their own. It is very effective for retaining the smallest particles because they have a large surface area and filter material that makes them up.

With various levels of filtration; 1, 5, 20, and 50 microns.

 

Coiled polypropylene yarn filter

Composed of coiled wires on plastic support, it is the most commonly used in protective filters. Its construction is one of the cleanest filters, not releasing particles from the filter matter itself.

With filtration levels; 1, 5, 20, 50, and 100 microns

 

Pleated polypropylene filter

Manufactured with a fabric made of the same material. It is the one that has the least load loss, allowing a high flow of filtration.

With 1, 5, 20, 50 microns of light.

 

Mesh filters.

There are also so-called mesh filters, which are more suitable for protection than for water purification. They consist of a plastic structure that supports a mesh normally made of nylon or polypropylene, which retains particles. They have little filter surface, so in case of excess dirt, they are filled immediately. The most normal measure of filter light is 75 microns for the cartridge format. Its biggest advantage is to be washable and reusable, as long as the mesh is undamaged.

 

Effectiveness of filters.

Cartridges must retain at least 95% of the suspended particles. Therefore, in cases of excellent particles, it is advisable to increase the number of filters to be used, especially if we have to protect osmosis membranes or microfiltration systems.

 

When to change the sediment filter.

The changes will be made depending on the number of elements present. Transparent filter housings help us visually control the amount of dirt retained in the filter. One fact that tells us the need for change is the loss of flow due to increased load loss. But as a general rule, to avoid the rot of the retained matter, the change will be made at least once a year.
